“Super Dimension Fortress MACROSS” was broadcast on television from 1982 to 1983.
It was also the first Japanese real robot animation to fully incorporate “transformation”, and the variable fighter “Valkyrie” designed by Kawamori Shoji.
The variable fighter “Valkyrie” designed by Kawamori Shoji was a symbol of this, and its humanoid form (batroid) was kept secret from the public until the TV broadcast.
The air battle action, in which Ichiro Itano, also known as the Japanese animator and missile master, developed the techniques he had developed for Mobile Suit Gundam and Legendary God of Giant Ideon, was also highly regarded, and was known as the ‘Itano Circus’ and had a great influence on the action direction of later robot animation.

In 1999, a giant object suddenly flew from space and crashed on an island in the Pacific Ocean, a space battleship over 1,200m long. Human society, having learned of the existence of aliens and the existence of war between them, established the ‘Integrated Earth Government’ to deal with the threat from outer space. After a global conflict (the Unified War), the crashed ship was refurbished and renamed MACROSS.

On the day of the MACROSS launch ceremony in 2009, a fleet of the Zentraedi Army, an alien formation, appeared near Earth. Sensing its presence, the main gun system of the MACROSS activates on its own and destroys a group of battleships. The Macross was a booby trap set by the Zentradi Army and the opposing camp, the Supervisory Force, and humanity was inevitably drawn into the First Interstellar War.

To escape the siege by the Zentraedi forces, the MACROSS attempts to evade to the far side of the moon by ford navigation. However, it fails in control, engulfing an entire island chain in the Pacific Ocean and arriving near Pluto’s orbit. From there, Macross is forced to make the long journey home.

The island’s 58,000 inhabitants rebuild their city on board the MACROSS and live to regain their daily lives beside the war.
Acrobatic pilot ‘Hikaru Ichijo’ joins the military to protect a girl he met during the war, ‘Lynn Minmei’, and becomes the pilot of the variable fighter Valkyrie.

The reality of the Zentradi people is gradually revealed during the battle. They are a genetically engineered race of fighters who are born knowing nothing but fighting, and they fear the people of Earth as a race protoculture with a ‘culture’. The Earth attack fleet is gradually transformed by contact with the culture, and a large Zentradi fleet emerges to annihilate both Macross and Earth.
Super Dimension Fortress MACROSS”, a masterpiece of Japanese robot animation, depicts the future of humanity and MACROSS, which is in danger of extinction, and the love between Teruki and Minmei.

The legendary Super Dimension Fortress MACROSS series was created in 1982 and has remained popular over the years.
One of the main attractions is the love triangle love story. While the robot action is the main attraction, the character drama and love story are the focus of the episodes, with the love story of three people in different positions – Hikaru, Minmei and Misa – being the main focus of the episodes and attracting fans.
Next, the variable fighter ‘Valkyrie’, the most attractive mechanic, is also one of the main attractions. The process by which the realistic VF-1 Valkyrie, which could be mistaken for an actual fighter aircraft, transforms into its robot form, the Battroid, without breaking down, has shocked many fans.
The VF-1 Valkyrie’s transformation is one of the mechanism’s functions, and the scenes where it fights while seamlessly transforming into its various forms – fighter, ghawk and battloid – are the deciding factor that makes it a fan favourite.
