“DARLING in the FRANXX” is a Japanese animated television series co-produced by TRIGGER and A-1 Pictures that aired in 2018.
It is TRIGGER’s first robot anime work. The staff includes director Atsushi Nishigori and other staff members who worked on “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” “Aim for the Top 2!” and “Gurren Lagann.”

DARLING in the FRANXX scene 1

Humans are enjoying civilization by building mobile fortress cities called “plantations” on the devastated land.
The “Mistletine,” or “Birdcage,” is a pilot housing facility built within the plantation.
The children live there. They do not know the outside world. They do not know the free sky. The only mission they were taught was to fight. The enemy is the “Shouting Dragon,” a giant life form that is shrouded in mystery. In order to confront this unseen enemy, the children drive a robot called “Franks. They believe that by riding the robot, they can prove their existence. There once was a boy who was called a child prodigy. His code number is 016, and his name is Hiro. But now he is a dropout. He is not needed. If he couldn’t ride Franks, he was as good as gone. Then one day, a mysterious girl called Zero Two appears in front of Hiro. From her forehead grows two glossy horns.

“DARLING in the FRANXX” has a wonderful worldview, beautiful visuals, and the occasional blackout curtain above and below the screen gives it the feel of a theatrical anime.

The characters and their personalities are very cute, especially Zero Two and 015, and the story’s daily episodes, structure, and development are the most fascinating aspects of this work.
The most attractive element of this work is that the reasons for Zero Two’s mysterious behavior and actions are gradually unraveled, even though he faces difficulties and conflicts with his friends and sometimes alone in overcoming the problems of human relationships, sexuality, and the world.
The final development of the film was also very well received, and is a representative Japanese work that I hope many people will see.
