DEVILMAN is a 53-episode media mix work published between 1972 and 1973. DEVILMAN is a Japanese manga/anime series written by Go Nagai, the manga artist who created numerous masterpieces such as Cutie Honey, The two works do not have the relationship of ‘manga work adapted into anime’ or ‘anime work adapted into manga’, but more like ‘two works drawn using the same basic setting’, as Go Nagai himself has pointed out.
The theme of the manga version is ‘horror’, with elements ranging from classic horror to modern horror. The anime version is, in principle, in the form of a heroic story that is complete in one episode, aimed at a wider age range of TV viewers than the manga.

DEVILMAN scene 1

Deep in the Himalayas, strange creatures trapped in the ice are about to make their move. They are the Daemons, demons who have been asleep for a long time, since long before the history of mankind, and who are now trying to exterminate the humans who own the earth and reclaim their world.

Dr Fudo and his son Akira, who were exploring the Himalayas, lose their lives to them. Devilman, one of the heroes of the Demon Tribe, takes over Akira’s body and sends him to Japan to conquer the human world, where he meets Akira Fudo’s cousin, Miki Makimura, who is fascinated by him.

Devilman, who has given up his mission to defeat the humans and betrayed the Demon Tribe to protect Miki, continues his lonely battle against the Demon Tribe’s beasts that attack him today.

DEVILMAN is a shocking work. It was an old work, but it was a dark hero, which was rare at the time, and the battle scenes with the enemies, especially in the manga, were drawn to a pretty bad extent. The final episode is still unforgettable. The combination with the music was particularly good, and the fact that it started with Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No.5 c-minor’ was a surprise. I think it really expressed the state of mind of the characters. It is a work that has had a profound influence on many contemporary works, and is an undisputed masterpiece.
